Science Vs Salutogenesis – Virus Versus Your Immune System

Science Vs Salutogenesis –

Virus Versus Your Immune System

What I am commenting on here I do so as a scientist

I have a BSc degree in Immunology, Cell Biology, Microbiology & Biochemistry

My Post-Graduate Diploma in Biomedical Research was in Biochemistry, Endocrinology and Immunology

And my PhD was in laboratory-based medicine on an autoimmune disease directed against the pituitary gland 👨‍🎓🥱

We know a lot through science and medicine🧐

We know what viruses are🦠

How they work in general / their life-cycle

How they become active🤧

And how they spread 👨‍👩‍👦‍👦

We also know a lot about how our immune system works🧠

What defences our body has🤮

Why we succumb to infections🤢

How we recover from those infections🦾

What science and medicine does not have a good handle on is our individual variations😎

Why one patient will succumb to the virus 🤮

While another person (who may live with, and be closely related to the first) will develop only mild symptoms🤒

And a third exposed to the same virus will display no symptoms at all😷

Definitely, co-existing conditions are a major factor 😫

That is that if you have a long-term health challenge (or chronic condition) your threshold and stamina is likely to be lowered and your resistance and resilience will be lowered as well 😥

The chief scientific officer said they have no cure for COVID19

That they don’t have specific drugs to target this virus

That they can only hope to keep you alive for long enough to allow your body to recover from the infection

This is the essence of health

Not that we never get sick

Most people think health is an absence of symptoms

Actually, when we have symptoms it is an expression of health – evidence of an active immune response

Without proper immune responses in the past you would not be alive today

It is a cliché that “what does not kill us makes us stronger”

This truism springs from the immune system having a memory – an efficient way of dealing with an infective agent that it has encountered before and wiping it out without causing a threat to your body as a whole – it happens without us even being aware of it

Medicine and science have not failed us with respect to this virus 🙈🙉🙊

Medical science relies on data – on specific information to develop knowledge – it will take time, trial, and unfortunately error, to find the best way ahead🕸

So, in the absence of specific measures we have reverted to methods employed in the last century:

🚮 hygiene,

😷 personal protection,

🔐 quarantine,

🥼 isolation and

🎺 mechanical ventilation

And all in the interest of one thing – time ⏰

Buying us time to gather data:

on the virus itself,

on its structure,

its life-cycle,

on its entry into our cells,

on our body’s responses to it

and how to tell who has had it and recovered

so that life can start to return to something approaching normalcy 🎯

It does however give us time also to reflect on something else – something greater – our greatest wealth: health! ♥

This is why, as chiropractors, we concentrate not on what makes us ill, but what makes us well –

on salutogenesis 🧬⚖🔗 🦺🕹🛡

not pathogenesis ⚗🧪🧫🔬💊🩹

Salutogenesis is an approach focusing on factors that support human health and well-being🦾💑 ,

rather than on factors that cause disease  ☠ 🛌

This is what chiropractic has been about from its inception and what it remains today

💡 “While other professions are concerned with changing the environment to suit the weakened body, chiropractic is concerned with strengthening the body to suit the environment.”🔎
