Are the chiropractors well qualified? All BCA chiropractors will have undergone a minimum four-year full-time internationally-accredited undergraduate course. They also have to demonstrate fitness to practice and to have continued their education to be able to qualify for annual re-registration with their governing body, the General Chiropractic Council (GCC) of the UK. It is illegal to practice as a chiropractor without being registered with the GCC in the UK. The British Chiropractic Association (BCA) is the professional body which represents over 50% of UK chiropractors interests and has actively promoted and supported chiropractic for the last 80 years. The BCA aim to promote, encourage and maintain high standards of conduct, practice, education and training within the profession in the UK. Objectives also include raising understanding and awareness in tackling the problems of musculo-skeletal conditions including back pain.
No. New patients are occasionally nervous of receiving their first chiropractic adjustment. This fear is usually from being told about “cracking” noises which occur with some adjustments. This sound (known as cavitation) is not bones cracking or rubbing together but the sudden drop in pressure causing a gas bubble in the joint space, which is reabsorbed in a few minutes. Chiropractors are extensively trained to perform adjustments gently and safely, tailoring treatment to suit the condition of the individual patient. Most people experience no discomfort from adjustments and many find the treatment enjoyable and relaxing.
How long will it take to get better? It is a myth that once treated you have to continue getting treatment for the rest of your life. A series or programme of treatments is usually appropriate and once the objective (i.e. getting to a comfortable state where you can do normal activities) is achieved, the treatments can be stopped. However, many people come to realise that the wear and tear of daily living does lead to further problems occurring and choose to have additional treatment from time to time to maintain a degree of comfort they quickly become used to.
£45.00 for the first consultation, report of findings and treatment (Students £30.00) £30.00 for subsequent treatments (Students £20.00) Massage £19.00 per each half hour
Can I claim back on my private health insurance? Yes, most private health funds allow you to claim back the cost of your treatment but it depends on what type of policy you have, and each company allows different amounts. Check with your health fund. You do not need to have a doctor’s referral in most cases.
